In a crowded office, staying focused might be difficult. There’s always something going on in the kitchen, whether it’s meetings, chats, or doughnuts to eat. Not to mention your coworkers approaching you to inquire about your position. You don’t have to be available to your employees all of the time, thankfully. There are tried-and-true methods for staying on task while keeping others away from you.
Here are some methods to keep focused to protect yourself and those around you.
Alter your surroundings
Temperature, air quality, odors, and colors can all have an impact on your ability to concentrate. Make improvements to the office on your own. Purchase air filters, light Pine scented candles, and paint the walls around you a productive blue.
Make your renovations at night, after everyone else has gone home for the day, to avoid cutting into your work time. What a pleasant surprise when they arrive early in the morning! Don’t worry, your firm will cover the costs.
Make Quiet Hours a Habit
Set stringent guidelines for them to follow if you can’t beat them. Set aside a few hours each day for quiet time. Chips and crunchy snacks are not permitted. Make a big deal out of it so others know you’re serious.
Put on a pair of headphones
Headphones announce to the world that I am too busy to listen to other people’s noise. If someone asks you to remove them, you will become irritated. Bonus points if you play them loudly enough to make it sound like your own little concert at your desk.
Have a cup of coffee
Coffee is a stimulant that helps you concentrate and stay awake. Just avoid drinking it in the first two hours after waking up, as this is when your body’s natural adrenaline keeps you alert, and coffee can disrupt this cycle. Also, don’t drink it right before a large meeting or on an empty stomach — you don’t want to be going to the bathroom the entire meeting, or appear restless or anxious. Never drink coffee after 1 p.m.; it will prevent you from falling asleep at night, creating a vicious cycle in which you will become increasingly fatigued with each passing day!
Organize Your Workspace
Maintain a tidy workspace and an uncluttered mind. Take a few minutes at the end of each day to clean your desk and return items to their proper places.
Make a list of all the things you need to get done
After that, toss it out the window! Clients and coworkers will request that you accomplish other high-priority jobs RIGHT NOW, PLEASE. That’s OK. The goal is that when making your list, you will feel in control of your life for a few seconds.
